We are not in the world of Star Wars yet, but China’s work show that some of the imagined world of laser weapons may not stay science fiction forever. The PLA is most likely not going to deploy augmented elite infantry with lasers to the South China Sea beaches any time soon, but as laser technology improves, even future infantry will have more powerful, and possibly lethal, directed energy weapons.
